Recycle and Smell Good Too!
Posted on | January 23, 2010 | Comments Off
If I have a signature fragrance in life it’s Angel by Thierry Mugler. I’ve been a connoisseur of the scent since it came out some years back. The chocolate and vanilla notes enchant, and besides people tell me I smell good. At any rate, the star or etoile shaped glass bottles are so beautiful I’ve hung on to many of them over the years. So imagine my suprise and delight to learn that Nordstorm is offering fill ups of the gorgeous little stars with Angel perfume for nearly half the price of buying a new bottle. Now that’s a deal that’s truly heaven sent.
Wax On

I think we’d all have to agree that waxing certainly falls into the” it takes pain to be beautiful” category. Fortunately, the wise souls at Maxine Salon (www.maxinesalon.com) on Rush Street in downtown Chicago (conveniently located across the street from The Penninsula) have come up with a brilliant way to at least take the edge off for us. Yes, they got a liquor license. And while I do enjoy the occassional mini bottle of wine or champagne with my highlights and haircut there these days, it’s really for the waxing appointments that this perk is just so incredibly fantastic. Add to that the skills of the numero uno wax warrior in Chicago, Jaime Lewis, in residence at Maxine and there ends up being little pain and a lot of gain. XXo, Amy
A Royal Treat

“The Young Victoria”, is a must see in my humble opine. I thoroughly enjoyed the fabulous sets, terrific costuming and the acting was through the roof fantastic. This romantic film sucks you in and doesn’t let go. All hail Fergie (no -not of The Black Eyed Peas fame, the other one Silly) in her significant accomplishment as Producer of this soon to be classic. Bubbly on a Budget

I thought it would be fitting to close out 2009 on a value conscious note. Being that we had already drank our lone bottle of Veuve Cliquot on Christmas Eve- well it was pretty much the only note available come New Year’s Eve. But here’s the part where the suprise and delight comes in. So, I have always wanted to sample Sofia Coppola’s California Blanc de Blancs and low and behold there it sat on the shelf of my neighborhood liquor store with a mere $18 pricetag. Let me assure you dear friends this was no bargain letdown. Let’s start with the fact that the bottle is so adorable adorned in pink cellophane. Then, once the cork came out there were plenty of bubbles to keep me entertained, and the taste was nothing short of fabulous.
Kind of like Sophia’s other great ouvre the delicious film Marie Antoinette. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLJ1vuUWprA

2009 A Rough One Even in the OC

Jeepers creepers like so many (possibly everyone?) I can’t wait to kick 2009 out the door and start my 2010 off with a sip of great champagne and a toast to life heading on the upswing again! It has been a tough year even for the friends you thought you never had to worry about. You know the ones that were able to spend $20,000 on bedding and $40,000 on watches and were always having fun parties by the pool and sexy getaways in wine country. You know what “friends” we’re talking about here – yes even for The Real Housewives of the OC 2009 has been tough. As we close out the year here hot mamma Tamra is on the verge of divorce and losing her home. Sweet Lynn faced eviction and a warrant for her arrest. Jeana weathered divorce and the demise of her real estate fortune. Gretchen faced the death of her fiance, scandal and financial worries. And Vicki seems more alone than ever. Chin chin girls – here’s to la dolce vita again in 2010!
Antioxidant Fabulosity

Sure I know Pomegranate juice is in vogue. And, it certainly is a great mixer with champagne, and Grey Goose, need I go on with that line of thought… However, what gets me even more excited when I contemplate all things Pom is Pomegranate seeds. These little ruby red yum yums are just so tasty and texture-y, and juicy and healthy even.
I remember one Christmas season many moons ago in the newsroom of my first TV news job. I was working with my friend Mary Jo who was the weekend anchor and she was eating the seeds out of a Pomegranate. She offered me some, and I was so taken that I also remember at one point she was like, ” Um okay that’s enough Amy….” Suffice to say I’ve had quite an affinity for these scarlet berries ever since. The problem is they are a whole bunch of work to dig out of the actual Pomegranate. That is until now. YES – Trader Joe’s has come to the rescue of Pomegranate afficianados everywhere because for under $4.00 you can purchase a box of them straight up with not Pomegranate digging issues – NONE AT ALL! Sometimes – I just dig into the box with a spoon and eat the entire thing. Talk about no guilt luxury. Does it get any better than this? XXo, Amy
Snowshoeing Rocks!
Posted on | December 30, 2009 | 1 Comment
This week I was transported to winter wonderland heaven when I strapped on my first pair of snowshoes ever and took off with my friend Heidi in the white covered wilds of the Morton Arboretum in west suburban Chicago. Although I didn’t have a heart rate monitor on, I feel like we burned plenty o calories hiking up the snow covered hilly terrain and girl talking all the way for about an hour. Although we rented our snowshoes for only $6.00 for 3 hours, my research indicates they cost somewhere between $59.99- $200.00 if you want to buy them depending on what you want. This was such a fun exercise outing in nature I can’t wait to go again soon! XXo, Amy

Cozy Up to Kitson
Posted on | November 22, 2009 | Comments Off
Could this sassy bag be any cuter? I found it during a recent trip to LA when I stopped by the famed Kitson boutique in Beverly Hills. I would like to give a shout out to Jenny, the adorable sales assistant who helped me with this selection over so many other uber fun color options that this great purse comes in. The price is insanely low – I want to say that with tax I only spent about fifty bucks. The sequins for day liven up most any outfit. There’s also plenty of room for everything and a nice big zipper compartment inside. I’ve had fun with it all fall, and now I can see how it will work with my holiday looks too. Check out Kitson online at www.shopkitson.com to snag your own version. XXo, Amy
